A Study of the Fairytales in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region

Abstract

A khuurch is a performer who composes and narrates a folk fairy tales drawn from a people’s historical legends, life struggles, or tales involving animals by harmonizing them with the melodies of a four-stringed fiddle. In performance, the khuurch combines a singing style with spoken verbal artistry to present khuur storytelling. The three fundamental elements of khuur storytelling are the performer (khuurch), the instrument (khuur), and the fairy tale (story). This article examines scholarly views on the origins of khuur storytelling and outlines classifications of its melodic patterns.
